Nissan EV Charger Installation

What a Nissan owner needs from a home charging installation: the right connector, the right circuit size, and an electrician who has wired it before.

Charging port and connector

The Leaf uses J1772 for Level 2 (and the older CHAdeMO plug for DC fast charging); the Ariya and newer Nissans use J1772 or NACS depending on model year, with adapters available.

How fast it charges at home

The Leaf charges at up to about 6.6 kW (roughly 27 amps) and the Ariya at about 7.2 kW on Level 2, so a 40-amp circuit and a 32-amp charger deliver the full rate.

Manufacturer and universal chargers

Any Level 2 charger works; Nissan does not require a branded unit.

Installation notes

Leaf owners rarely need a panel upgrade, since the car cannot use more than a modest circuit. That makes it one of the least expensive EV installations we do.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Nissan-branded charger?

No. The manufacturer unit works well and is a good choice if you already have it; a universal hardwired charger performs the same and often costs less.

Will my panel handle it?

Usually a 200-amp panel will; many 100-amp panels will not without load management or an upgrade. The load calculation in our assessment answers it, and we quote both options.

I called Progressive because of storm/tree damage, which took out both my power and caused my water main to burst. Progressive could do both. From my initial call to the arrival of the electrician and plumber, I couldn’t have been more pleased. … I would use them again and highly recommend them for your ‘mechanical’ needs.

We really appreciate the extra time, phone calls to the supplier, and careful reading of the instructions to do the job right. Gilbert expressed his philosophy as ‘doing the job the way he would want it done in his own home.’ Once again, we are most pleased with the professional and courteous service your company provides.

Day or night, call Progressive.
