Ford EV Charger Installation

What a Ford owner needs from a home charging installation: the right connector, the right circuit size, and an electrician who has wired it before.

Charging port and connector

The Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning use the J1772 port on earlier model years and the NACS port on newer ones; Ford supplies adapters so either works with either charger.

How fast it charges at home

The Mach-E and standard-range Lightning charge at up to 48 amps (about 11 kW). The extended-range Lightning can take up to 80 amps (19.2 kW) from Ford's own charger.

Manufacturer and universal chargers

Ford's Charge Station Pro is the 80-amp unit sold with the extended-range Lightning and is the gateway to the truck's home backup power feature; it needs a 100-amp circuit. Ford also supports any hardwired or plug-in Level 2 charger.

Installation notes

Lightning owners who want home backup power need the Charge Station Pro plus the home integration system and a transfer switch. Progressive installs all of it, as a licensed electrical and generator contractor.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Ford-branded charger?

No. The manufacturer unit works well and is a good choice if you already have it; a universal hardwired charger performs the same and often costs less.

Will my panel handle it?

Usually a 200-amp panel will; many 100-amp panels will not without load management or an upgrade. The load calculation in our assessment answers it, and we quote both options.

I called Progressive because of storm/tree damage, which took out both my power and caused my water main to burst. Progressive could do both. From my initial call to the arrival of the electrician and plumber, I couldn’t have been more pleased. … I would use them again and highly recommend them for your ‘mechanical’ needs.

We really appreciate the extra time, phone calls to the supplier, and careful reading of the instructions to do the job right. Gilbert expressed his philosophy as ‘doing the job the way he would want it done in his own home.’ Once again, we are most pleased with the professional and courteous service your company provides.

Day or night, call Progressive.
