## Charging at home, done right the first time

Most EV owners do more than 80 percent of their charging at home, so the home charger is the one that matters. A properly sized dedicated circuit, a charger that matches the car, and a panel with the capacity to carry it are the difference between an installation that just works for a decade and one that trips breakers and nuisance-limits the car. Progressive has installed chargers for every major brand across the Triangle.

## The three charging levels

- **Level 1 (120 V).** The cord that comes with the car, plugged into a standard outlet. Adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. Fine for a plug-in hybrid or a very short commute; too slow for most EV owners.
- **Level 2 (240 V).** A dedicated circuit and a wall-mounted charger in the garage or driveway. Adds roughly 20 to 45 miles of range per hour depending on the car and the circuit size, and refills almost any EV overnight. This is what Progressive installs in homes.
- **DC fast charging.** The high-power stations along highways and at commercial sites. They need three-phase power and are not installed at homes; see our [commercial EV charger](/commercial/electrical/ev-chargers) page.

## How a home charger installation works

1. **Assessment and load calculation.** We look at your panel, its available capacity, the distance to the parking spot and the car you drive (or plan to). A load calculation confirms whether the panel can carry a new 40- or 60-amp circuit.
2. **Permit.** EV charger circuits are permitted electrical work in North Carolina. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection.
3. **Panel work, if needed.** Older or full panels may need a breaker space, a sub-panel, a load-management device or a [panel replacement](/electrical/panel-upgrades). We quote this up front, never as a surprise.
4. **Circuit and charger.** A dedicated 240 V circuit is run to the charging location and the charger is hardwired or fitted with a NEMA 14-50 receptacle, mounted and weather-rated for outdoor spots.
5. **Inspection and commissioning.** The county inspects, we set up the charger app and confirm the car charges at full rate.
6. **Maintenance and repair.** Chargers, cables and connectors wear. We service what we install and repair most brands.

## Types of home chargers

- **Hardwired vs plug-in.** Hardwired chargers can run at 48 amps and are the cleanest outdoor installation; plug-in units use a NEMA 14-50 outlet at up to 40 amps and are easy to take with you.
- **Connector.** Newer EVs sold in the US use the NACS (Tesla-style) port; earlier models use J1772. Adapters bridge either way, and universal chargers ship with both.
- **Smart chargers.** Wi-Fi units schedule charging for off-peak rates, track energy use and qualify for some utility rebates.
- **Load-managed chargers.** For homes with full panels, a charger or a device that throttles when the house is busy can avoid a full service upgrade.

## Your car, your charger

All EV brands are welcome; every one has its own connector, charging rate and manufacturer charger, and the installation is sized accordingly. Pick your brand for the specifics:

- [Tesla](/electrical/ev-chargers/tesla)
- [Ford](/electrical/ev-chargers/ford)
- [Chevrolet, GMC & Cadillac](/electrical/ev-chargers/chevrolet-gmc-cadillac)
- [Hyundai, Kia & Genesis](/electrical/ev-chargers/hyundai-kia-genesis)
- [Rivian](/electrical/ev-chargers/rivian)
- [Toyota & Lexus](/electrical/ev-chargers/toyota-lexus)
- [Nissan](/electrical/ev-chargers/nissan)
- [BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche & Volvo](/electrical/ev-chargers/bmw-mercedes-audi-volkswagen)

## Repair and maintenance

Chargers fail, cables get run over, connectors wear, and apps stop talking to units. We repair and maintain the chargers we install and most other brands, and we can move a charger when you move.

## Frequently asked questions

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?It depends mostly on the distance from the panel to the parking spot and whether the panel needs work. We give a flat-rate quote after a quick assessment, with the panel option priced separately so you can see both.

Do I need a permit?Yes, in North Carolina an EV charger circuit is permitted electrical work. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.

Will my 100-amp panel handle a charger?Sometimes, with a smaller charger or a load-management device. Often it is the right time for a panel replacement, which also prepares the house for heat pumps and other electric loads. The load calculation decides.

Can you install the charger outdoors?Yes. Hardwired, weather-rated chargers are made for driveways and carports.

I called Progressive because of storm/tree damage, which took out both my power and caused my water main to burst. Progressive could do both. From my initial call to the arrival of the electrician and plumber, I couldn’t have been more pleased. … I would use them again and highly recommend them for your ‘mechanical’ needs.

We really appreciate the extra time, phone calls to the supplier, and careful reading of the instructions to do the job right. Gilbert expressed his philosophy as ‘doing the job the way he would want it done in his own home.’ Once again, we are most pleased with the professional and courteous service your company provides.
